BP faces £14bn hit

BP is facing a $17.5bn (£13.8bn) writedown in the value of its oil-and-gas assets as the energy producer cut its oil price forecasts for the next three decades. BP expects Brent crude to average $55 a barrel from now until 2050 due to the “enduring economic impact” of the coronavirus crisis and the global shift to green energy. The company said it would have to become a "leaner, faster-moving and lower cost organisation". Last week, BP announced plans to cut almost 10,000 jobs by the end of the year.

When success backfires on us

Previous success can easily blind companies to new opportunities and insights. The cost of trying — and potentially failing at — something new may seem too daunting to consider. But falling into such "competency traps" can ultimately rob businesses of future success, writes BBC Worklife's David Robson. The examples of such missteps abound: Xerox with personal computing, Kodak with digital photography, etc. What can companies do to steer clear of the traps? Dedicate resources to exploring new avenues, and give sufficient time and attention to the people on the team with new, novel ideas.

Virus fears hit global shares

Global stock markets suffered their worst day since March amid fears that a second spike in coronavirus cases could cause more economic damage. US stocks fell the most in 12 weeks on Thursday, snapping a rally that had approached all-time highs, as the UK’s FTSE 100, the Dax in Germany and France's CAC 40 all lost 4% or more. Share prices had gained in recent weeks on hopes of a rapid recovery as governments loosened coronavirus restrictions, with the pullback marking what one strategist termed a “wakeup call”.

Leaders in music and performing arts have warned that the sector could be decimated by the coronavirus without government support. The Musicians’ Union told MPs that half of music venues would not be able to stay open without support, while two major orchestra directors have called for a timeline for restarting performing arts. Theatres have warned of collapse, with large overheads and no income meaning millions in losses. Membership body UK Theatre said 70% of theatres and production companies could go out of business by the end of the year and others would have to cut jobs to survive.

4th Gate: The Orion Gate.

This is the transitional Gate between the three first gates and the last three. This gate gives us the clearest picture of our purpose here and initiates our journey towards it. It can also provide the toughest challenges, as our purpose on the earth might not be the easiest to attain! Again, this is because it brings up our deepest fears and deepest wounding, but these wounding are our pathway into manifesting our purpose, even if that purpose takes years to achieve. This particular Gateway can take quite a time to work through in our lives as it is the bridge between our ‘normal’ life and our ‘spiritual purpose. Rome wasn’t built in a day!

4. Silent Heaven

Silent heaven is the heaven of those who view this world as a bad and scary place. It is the heaven of those who have made death their primary reference point.

Death is the mystery; death is the peak experience, murder and violence are the way to power and enlightenment. The Columbine shooters in Colorado believed in the silent heaven because once they tasted the glory of taking life by killing thirteen innocent people, they sent each other to silent heaven where there is no feeling or awareness - just the quiet sleep of death. Silent heaven is the place depressed and suicidal people desire in order to escape the painful experience of this life.

Sloth

Parable of the Wheat and the Tares (1624) by Abraham Bloemaert, Walters Art Museum

Sloth (Latin: tristitia or acedia ("without care")) refers to a peculiar jumble of notions, dating from antiquity and including mental, spiritual, pathological, and physical states. It may be defined as absence of interest or habitual disinclination to exertion.

In his Summa Theologica, Saint Thomas Aquinas defined sloth as "sorrow about spiritual good".

The scope of sloth is wide. Spiritually, acedia first referred to an affliction attending religious persons, especially monks, wherein they became indifferent to their duties and obligations to God. Mentally, acedia has a number of distinctive components of which the most important is affectlessness, a lack of any feeling about self or other, a mind-state that gives rise to boredom, rancor, apathy, and a passive inert or sluggish mentation. Physically, acedia is fundamentally associated with a cessation of motion and an indifference to work; it finds expression in laziness, idleness, and indolence.
